Tree removal cost by height
Height is the biggest single factor. HomeAdvisor's ranges:
| Tree height | Typical national range |
|---|---|
| Up to 30 feet | About $150 to $450 |
| 30 to 60 feet | About $450 to $1,200 |
| 60 to 80 feet | About $800 to $1,500 |
| Over 80 feet | About $1,000 to $2,000 |
How much to take down a 30-foot tree? A 30-foot tree sits at the line between HomeAdvisor's first two rows, so roughly $150 to $1,200 depending on condition and access. In an open yard it's at the low end. Over a roof or a fence, expect more.
How big a tree costs $1,000? In HomeAdvisor's table, $1,000 falls inside the 30-to-60-foot, 60-to-80-foot and over-80-foot ranges. A smaller tree can also reach $1,000 if it's over the house, near a line or has to be taken down piece by piece.
What else moves the price
Location and what's underneath. HomeAdvisor says trees near structures or power lines need special equipment and precautions, and that branches near structures must be lowered by rope. Large trees near power lines can top $10,000.
Condition. A rotted, leaning or neglected tree can take extra rigging. HomeAdvisor puts an arborist's visit to inspect a leaning or diseased tree at about $860.
Species. HomeAdvisor's ranges by type include oak at about $200 to $2,000, cedar at about $250 to $1,500 and pine at about $250 to $1,500.
Equipment. Trees over 80 feet may need a crane, which HomeAdvisor puts at about $250 to $600 per day. Its extra machinery can push a complex job to $6,000 to $7,000.
Travel. HomeAdvisor says companies may charge $50 to $200 in travel fees if you're outside their usual area. If you're in a smaller town, ask.
Extras that may not be included. HomeAdvisor lists chipping at about $95, log splitting at about $70 per tree and debris hauling at about $70 when they aren't in the base price. Stump work is rarely included.
Permits. HomeAdvisor says some places require permits, often $60 to $150. We didn't find a City of Abilene permit requirement for removing a tree on a private residential lot, but right-of-way trees, easements and HOA rules can differ. If you're not sure, call the City of Abilene at 325-676-6200.
Trimming costs
LawnStarter's September 2026 figures by tree height:
| Tree height | Typical national range per tree |
|---|---|
| Under 30 feet | About $85 to $415 |
| 30 to 60 feet | About $215 to $790 |
| Over 60 feet | About $475 to $1,835 |
LawnStarter puts oak trimming at about $230 to $1,480 per tree. Fixr puts trimming at $175 to $750 overall and pruning by an arborist at about $350 to $650.
What is a reasonable price for tree trimming in Texas? These are national numbers; none of these guides published an Abilene-only figure. A quote inside these ranges for a similar tree is normal. A quote far outside them should come with a reason, like a line nearby or a tree that has to be climbed and rigged.
Stump costs
HomeAdvisor's stump guide puts removal at about $195 to $609, averaging about $369. Many companies charge about $2 to $5 per inch of diameter, with a minimum of about $100 to $150, and the price drops to about $40 to $75 per stump when you have several. Grinding runs about $150 to $500. Manual removal of stump and roots runs about $200 to $700.
How to pay less without cutting corners
- Bundle the work. Removal plus stump grinding, or several trees in one visit, usually costs less per item than separate trips.
- Pick the season for oaks. The Texas A&M Forest Service says to avoid pruning or wounding oaks from February through June. Plan oak work for July through January.
- Book before storms, not after. HomeAdvisor says rates spike after big storms, when crews are in high demand. A cracked or dead tree is cheaper to deal with on your schedule.
- Haul small limbs yourself. Abilene residents can take limbs 6 to 8 feet long and up to 18 inches thick to the Abilene Brush Center at 2149 Sandy St. for free with a driver's license and a current City of Abilene municipal services statement. Ask the company what it takes off the price if it leaves the small brush.
- Check your insurance after a storm. The Texas Department of Insurance says many policies pay for damage from falling trees and give some coverage for removing trees that hit the house or block the driveway.
- Let AEP handle its lines. AEP Texas trims or removes trees growing too close to its pole-to-pole lines. Trees threatening the service drop to your house are the owner's job, but AEP can temporarily disconnect the line if you call 877-373-4858 at least two business days ahead.
Can seniors get a tree removed for free?
We don't know of a general free tree removal program in the Abilene area. Two things are free: the City of Abilene's curbside brush pickup in odd-numbered months, and drop-off at the Abilene Brush Center for residents. AEP Texas's forestry team handles trees that grow into its pole-to-pole lines. For a dangerous tree on your own property, ask your insurance agent whether your policy helps.
How we got these numbers
Every price on this page comes from a national cost guide we opened and read in October 2026: HomeAdvisor's tree removal and stump removal guides (both updated June 19, 2026), LawnStarter's tree trimming guide (updated September 24, 2026) and Fixr's tree trimming guide. None of them is an Abilene-only survey, and none is a quote from the company we refer you to.
Local quotes can differ from national ranges for good reasons: travel distance, how busy companies are after a storm, how hard the tree is to reach, and whether brush hauling is included. That's why the best use of this page is to check whether a quote is in the normal range and to know what to ask about.
Questions to ask about any quote
- Is it all-in: cutting, cleanup, brush hauling and log removal?
- Is the stump included? If so, how deep is the grind?
- Is there a travel or minimum charge?
- What could raise the price once work starts?
- Can I see proof of liability insurance in the company's name?
- For oaks: is the timing outside February through June, and will cuts be painted?
More answers are in the tree service FAQ. For what each job involves, see tree removal, tree trimming, stump grinding, mesquite tree removal and storm damage tree removal.
