The oak wilt rule: no oak pruning February through June

If you have live oaks or red oaks, this is the most important thing on the page.

The Texas A&M Forest Service says to avoid pruning or wounding oak trees from February through June. That's when oak wilt spreads most easily: red oaks that died of the disease the year before can grow fungal mats under the bark, and small sap-feeding beetles carry spores from those mats to fresh wounds on healthy oaks. The Forest Service says pruning in that window should only be considered for immediate safety concerns.

Its second rule applies all year: paint every fresh wound on an oak, no matter the month. "Any kind of paint will accomplish this task," the Forest Service says. Wounds from mowers, string trimmers and storm cleanup count too.

Why it matters here:

  • Oak wilt is in the area. A 2019 KTXS report quoted an Abilene tree worker saying oak wilt was first reported in Abilene about a decade earlier and was getting worse each year.
  • Live oaks share it through their roots. The Forest Service says live oaks have interconnected root systems and can move the disease easily. Red oaks are the most susceptible and can die in as little as a month after infection.
  • Treatment is hard. The same tree worker told KTXS that oak wilt treatment is "expensive, problematic and not necessarily successful."

So the cheapest oak wilt control is calendar control. Plan oak trimming for July through January.

Signs a tree needs trimming

  • Limbs over or touching the roof, which scrape shingles and drop leaves into gutters.
  • Dead branches in the canopy. They're the first to fall in wind.
  • Crossing or rubbing limbs that wear through each other's bark.
  • Low limbs over a driveway, sidewalk or alley.
  • A heavy, one-sided canopy after a storm took out limbs on the other side.
  • Branches near the line to your house. That's trimming work, but AEP Texas has to be called first (see below).

What good trimming looks like

The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) publishes homeowner pruning guidance at TreesAreGood.org. Its main points, which you can use to judge any company's plan:

  • No cut without a reason. ISA says each cut can change how the tree grows, so every branch removed should have a purpose: dead wood, clearance, a weak attachment.
  • No topping. ISA calls topping "perhaps the most harmful tree pruning practice known," because it leads to stress, decay and risk.
  • Reduction instead of topping. To shorten a tree, ISA says to cut leaders back to side branches at least one-third the diameter of the cut stem.
  • Raising for clearance. Removing lower limbs to clear a roof, driveway or sidewalk is a standard technique ISA calls raising.
  • Timing. ISA says light pruning of dead or weak limbs can be done any time, that growth and wound closure are best when pruning happens before the spring growth flush, and that heavy pruning just after the flush should be avoided. Trees susceptible to disease, such as oaks and oak wilt, shouldn't be pruned during active transmission periods.
  • Wound paint on oaks, every time, per the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Ask the company to walk you through which limbs come off and why.

Trimming near power lines

AEP Texas says you should never try to trim or remove trees near power lines, and that work near lines should only be done by trained professionals.

  • Pole-to-pole lines: AEP's forestry team handles trees growing too close to these. Report them through AEP's tree-problem form or by calling 877-373-4858.
  • The service drop to your house: AEP says that's the property owner's responsibility. Call 877-373-4858 at least two business days before the work, and AEP can send a crew to temporarily disconnect the line.

Mention any nearby line in your request so the company can plan for it.

What tree trimming costs in Abilene

National guides checked in October 2026:

Tree height Typical national range per tree (LawnStarter)
Under 30 feet About $85 to $415
30 to 60 feet About $215 to $790
Over 60 feet About $475 to $1,835

LawnStarter puts oak trimming at about $230 to $1,480 per tree, and Fixr puts trimming in general at $175 to $750, about $450 on average. Trimming several trees in one visit, easy access and less cleanup bring the price down. Large trees, lines nearby and hauling every limb push it up. Pricing and scheduling come from the company. More detail is in the tree removal cost guide.

The brush

The City of Abilene says hired tree trimmers are contractors, and residential curbs can't be used for their disposal. So ask whether hauling is included. If you trim small limbs yourself, Abilene's curbside brush pickup runs once per residence in odd-numbered months, with limbs cut to 4 feet. The Abilene brush disposal guide has the details.

Questions to ask before trimming starts

  • Which limbs are coming off, and why?
  • For oaks: is this outside February through June, and will every cut be painted?
  • Who assessed the tree? If the company says an ISA Certified Arborist did, ask for the name and look it up in ISA's directory at TreesAreGood.org.
  • Can I see proof of liability insurance in the company's name?
  • Is brush hauling included in the price?

Common questions

What is a reasonable price for tree trimming in Texas?

LawnStarter, updated in September 2026, puts professional trimming at about $430 to $640 per tree nationally, from as little as $78 for a small tree to about $1,835 for one over 60 feet. Fixr puts the national range at $175 to $750, about $450 on average. Prices in Abilene depend on the tree's height, how much comes off and how hard it is to reach.

Can I trim my neighbor's tree that hangs over my yard?

The Texas State Law Library says a neighboring landowner has the right to trim branches back to the property line, but can be sued for injuring the tree or other property in the process. Talk to your neighbor first, stay on your side of the line, and don't cut so much that the tree is harmed. If the tree is an oak, follow the February-to-June rule too.

When should pecan trees be pruned?

Pecans aren't oaks, so the Forest Service's February-to-June oak rule doesn't apply to them. ISA's general guidance is that growth and wound closure are best when pruning happens before the spring growth flush, which points to late winter for major cuts. Dead limbs can come off any time. Ask the company what it recommends for your tree.

Is topping a tree a good idea?

No. The International Society of Arboriculture calls topping perhaps the most harmful pruning practice known, because it leads to stress, decay and risk. If a tree is too tall for its spot, ask about reduction cuts back to side branches, or whether removal and replanting makes more sense.

What if a limb is touching the line to my house?

AEP Texas says trees threatening the service drop are the property owner's responsibility, and asks you to call 877-373-4858 at least two business days before trimming so it can temporarily disconnect the line. Don't trim near a line yourself.
